In the vineyards of Volkacher Kirchberg sits enthroned the late gothic pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten, to get there you have to hike up the vineyard. The reward is an astonishing 360° overview. Through middle age the number of pilgrims increased, so a new building was necessary. There is an extraordinary harmony between proportions and equipment that gives you peace and inner tranquility. Inside the church there is a fresco of the Saint Christopherus-patron of the winegrower. The famous artist Tilmann Riemenschneider made the relief of the altar named Madonna im Rosenkranz. If the sun shines through the windows it feels like a holy room.
You can visit the church on your own (entrance fee 2,00 €) or with a guide (please register same day till 3 p.m at the touristinformation), the tour starts at 4.30 p.m.
